A Good Website Marketing Plan

We talk to a number of small companies, and it is obvious that very few of them have a website marketing plan. Some might think they have a plan, they throw a few hundred or few thousand dollars at pay per click advertising, some even buy SEO services. But very few of them have a website marketing plan.

We just did a project for a small industrial company that gets most of their leads from a paper-based directory that has been printed in their industry for many, many years. It is quite expensive to advertise in this directory but for many years it was worth the expense of purchasing an ad. But even in the industrial world, times are changing, and many of their potential clients are now going online. So suddenly, this 25+ year company is losing market share because their business has changed to an online environment with new competitors that have entered the market.

This comment from the owner sums up their search engine ranking position. He said,"the only traffic we get to our website is from people that already know about us". So even though they have several factors working in their favor - an established website on an aged domain, with great content and even a fair amount of backlinks, they are not getting any traffic. The reason become obvious once we began the initial SEO audit - from an SEO perspective, nothing really had ever been done on their website. The result was that their website was buried so far down in the search engines that it was impossible to find.

There are many companies that find themselves in a similar situation - they have nice websites, great content, and every other available bell and whistle. Everything that is except traffic.

For this particular client, the initial website marketing plan was simple, and included the following:

As with any SEO project, we started with keyword research to find the best possible keywords
After the keyword list was established, existing pages were optimized for the targeted keywords where possible
New content pages were created for targeted keywords that were found but where no content existed
To build a mailing list we developed a lead capture page to collect name, address, email and phone numbers for newsletters and other special offers
Added a blog to the existing website so that new, fresh content could be added on a regular basis
Established a social network presence and started submitting content to social bookmarking sites
Began an effort to post online press releases on a consistent basis when there was news-worthy information available
Started syndicating the blog content to RSS feeds and other syndication options to spread the content and to spread back links
Established a consistent link building strategy to target pages on the website

During the initial phase, the goal was to get the website properly indexed in the search engines and start building page rank for the targeted keywords. This was a great improvement as now at least people who were searching for a particular keyword phrase could at least the client's website and make contact. The next step is to migrate to an ecommerce platform, add lots of original video content, become much more active in social networking, and more.

The primary point to note is that a website marketing plan takes time to implement and will always be a moving target. The most important thing to is get started with a website marketing plan and let it evolve over time as your needs and budget require.

How To Check Backlinks

Understanding how to check backlinks is very important if you want to be able to monitor your progress with your SEO program. There are many free ways to do this, if you are only looking for a 'number'. But if you are wanting to analyze the backlinks you will need to purchase a professional tool that provides detailed analysis.
The free backlink checkers leave a lot to be desired. Most of these programs only provide back link counts to the root domain and you have to wade through ads and other marketing messages to actually get to the numbers they are reporting, not to mention the popup ads. Some even try to force a download of some utility to get the results!

Another problem with the free programs is that they are not very consistent in reporting the number of backlinks you have. Go to different free back link checker sites and you will get different results. Some provide such basic information that it is not hardly even usable. Unless of course you upgrade to their special program that will give you all the details for a low monthly cost.

I say, do not even waste your time with these because there really is no value in the numbers that these free programs provide.

Number of backlinks by page rank of the linking website - in other words, you can see how many links you have from PR0 websites, from PR1 websites, etc. all the way up to PR10
The anchor text that is used for your backlinks with a count of the total number of instances a particular keyword anchor text is used
Details of the anchor text by PR site - for example you will see how many anchor text links for each PR site that is providing a link

Again, this type of detailed analysis is extremely important to monitor the performance of your rank building exercise.

The term SEO means search engine optimization, which is the practice of improving the visibility of a website in internet search engines via “natural”, or "organic" search results. The definition of natural or organic search means that the ranking websites are listed in the main results of the search engine, not in the paid or pay-per-click areas (which are listed down the right side of the page and sometimes at the very top of the page).

Getting listed in the paid sections is easy - just bid enough money per click and you can have all the #1 listings you want. But you better have deep pockets because pay-per-click can get real expensive, real quick. If you want to rank in the main section (natural or organic) then you have to earn those positions.

Search engines - such as Google, Yahoo, Bing and others - regularly send their "spiders" out to “crawl” the internet. When the internet was first forming, it was often very easy to get top search engine rankings. Just put some content on the page, mention your keywords a few times and it was sort of simple to get ranked at the top of search results. In today's more competitive market, obtaining top positions in the organic results is much more difficult. First there is much more competition now that there was before - there are over 14 billion websites active on the web. But just as important, the search engines have become much more complex in how they rank pages in the search engines, and this is changing constantly.

So even if you think you understand how SEO works now, it can all change overnight. The search engines look across the internet for links from other website pages pointing back to your site. Depending on the quality of those pages, the keyword relevancy of those pages (to your website) and the content relevancy of linking website, the back links can provide high value to your search engine ranking. The search engines want to return information to the person who entered the search term, that is the value that the search engines provide. Google arguably does a better of this than other search engines and that is why they generate 80%+ of all searches. Do you have keyword search statistics to help you base your seo strategy to achieve high search engine positioning? Without having these keyword search statistics, you might as well be shooting blanks at improving your keyword and search engine optimization.

There is no way you can guess on which keywords you should target for your niche and your website without doing a thorough and detailed analysis. If you have experience doing this, then it's all part of the daily routine that most internet marketers spend their time on every day. For example, I probably spend 4-6 hours per day on keyword analysis, and currently use five different tools to generate my keyword list and then analyze which ones will bring the most targeted traffic to your website.

You can bet that your competition - or at least the ones that have first page ranking for your niche - have done extensive keyword analysis and are continuing to dig deeper to find new keyword phrases to help increase their traffic even more. Keyword optimization is not a one time deal, but rather is an ongoing exercise that never ends. For just as quickly as you get page one ranking, someone else is doing everything possible to take it away.

Although SEO has the appearance of being very complicated, it really is quite simple when you consider the basic steps that you must follow:

analyze keywords and pick a specific group of keywords to target
optimize your website's onpage optimization using meta title, description and keyword tags, header tags, keyword relevant content, and make sure the keyword density does not exceed standards (about 3% - 4% density)
create backlinks by posting articles to social bookmarking websites, submitting articles, etc. using your targeted keywords as the anchor text

If you do these things on a consistent basis, you will see your search engine rankings increase. But it takes time and effort, there is no silver bullet.
